Background of the Study
Chronic diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes, and arthritis, are prevalent among the elderly population in Kaduna State and globally. These diseases often require long-term management and can lead to a diminished quality of life. In addition to the physical burden, chronic diseases have a significant impact on the mental well-being of elderly patients. Depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline are common psychological issues faced by older adults with chronic conditions (Ibrahim et al., 2024). The interaction between physical illness and mental health is particularly concerning because it can lead to a vicious cycle of worsening symptoms and reduced functional ability.
This study aims to investigate how chronic diseases affect the mental well-being of elderly patients in Kaduna State and identify potential interventions that could mitigate these impacts.
Statement of the Problem
The burden of chronic diseases on elderly individuals in Kaduna State is compounded by the mental health challenges that arise as a result. Despite the growing recognition of the link between physical and mental health in older adults, there is insufficient research focusing on how chronic diseases specifically affect the mental well-being of elderly patients in this region. This study seeks to fill this gap by exploring the relationship between chronic conditions and mental health issues among the elderly population in Kaduna State.
Objectives of the Study
To examine the impact of chronic diseases on the mental well-being of elderly patients in Kaduna State.
To assess the relationship between chronic conditions and psychological disorders such as depression and anxiety in elderly individuals in Kaduna State.
To recommend strategies to improve the mental well-being of elderly patients living with chronic diseases in Kaduna State.
Research Questions
How do chronic diseases impact the mental well-being of elderly patients in Kaduna State?
What is the relationship between chronic diseases and mental health disorders (such as depression and anxiety) in elderly patients in Kaduna State?
What interventions can be implemented to improve the mental health of elderly patients with chronic diseases in Kaduna State?
Research Hypotheses
Chronic diseases significantly negatively affect the mental well-being of elderly individuals in Kaduna State.
Elderly patients with chronic diseases are more likely to experience mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety.
Interventions aimed at managing chronic diseases can improve the mental health of elderly patients in Kaduna State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on elderly patients diagnosed with chronic diseases in both urban and rural areas of Kaduna State. Limitations may include challenges in accurately diagnosing mental health conditions and the variability in healthcare access between different regions.
